While most 1950s cookbooks were made in earnest and have only become comical with age, a self-published cookbook by Pop artist Andy Warhol purposefully poked fun at the fad foods of the day. Later this month, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonhams.com\/auctions\/26731\/preview_lot\/5439086\/\" target=\"_blank\">colour copy of Warhol\u2019s satirical cookbook<\/a> will head to auction at Bonhams in their online Fine Books and Manuscripts auction.<\/p>\n<p>Printed in 1959, the cookbook was created when Warhol was still working as a graphic designer and was not yet the household name he is today. He worked with interior designer Suzie Frankfurt to concoct the cookbook and now, one of just 34 colour copies will be up for grabs with a pre-sale estimate of \u00a322,000 to \u00a336,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.art-critique.com\/en\/2021\/03\/andy-warhol-satirical-cookbook-heads-to-auction\/image-7\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.art-critique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image.jpeg?fit=625%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"A bright illustration by Andy Warhol of a made up French dish\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book deliberately mocks the haute-cuisine cookbooks of the late 1950s that were marketed towards American housewives focused on becoming the ultimate hostess. Frankfurt created the fanciful recipes, which included nonsensical descriptions, and Warhol illustrated those recipes. Warhol enlisted his mother for her calligraphy skills to write the recipes, deliberate misspellings included, adding an extra layer of whimsy to the book.<\/p>\n<p>Titled <em>Wild Raspberries<\/em>, a nod to Ingmar Bergman\u2019s film <em>Wild Strawberries<\/em>, it included recipes like \u201cOmelet Greta Garbo,\u201d a delicacy \u201calways to be eaten alone in a candlelit room.\u201d A recipe for \u201cSeared Roebuck\u201d offered a savvy tip for cooks: \u201cIt is important to note that roebuck shot in ambush is infinitely better than roebuck killed after a chase.\u201d Another cheeky recipe \u201cto be served to very thin people\u201d was \u201cChocolate Balls a la Chambord.\u201d\u00a0If those recipes weren\u2019t strenuous enough to perfect, try \u201cPiglet a la Trader Vics,\u201d which suggested that home cooks \u201cContact Trader Vic\u2019s and order a 40 pound suckling pig to serve 15. Have Hanley take the Carey Cadillac to the side entrance and receive the pig at exactly 6:45. Rush home immediately and place on the open spit for 50 minutes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.art-critique.com\/en\/2021\/03\/andy-warhol-satirical-cookbook-heads-to-auction\/image-1-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"643\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.art-critique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-1.jpeg?fit=643%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"A bright illustration by Andy Warhol of a made up French dish\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book was printed by Seymour Berlin and bound by rabbis in downtown New York City. According to Frankfurt, Warhol paid four schoolboys who lived upstairs from him to colour in the 34 colour copies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.art-critique.com\/en\/We%20thought%20it%20would%20be%20a%20masterpiece%20and%20we%E2%80%99d%20sell%20thousands.%20I%20think%20we%20sold%2020.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\">In a 1997 interview<\/a>, Frankfurt called <em>Wild Raspberries<\/em> \u201ca funny cookbook for people who don\u2019t cook.\u201d She continued that she and Warhol \u201cthought it would be a masterpiece and we\u2019d sell thousands. I think we sold 20.\u201d Many of the cookbooks were given away to friends in the end as gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<em>Wild Raspberries<\/em> didn\u2019t become the success they expected, it wouldn\u2019t be the end of Andy Warhol\u2019s food-based works. Just a few years after illustrating <em>Wild Raspberries<\/em>, he created the first of his Campbell\u2019s Soup Can prints, which still infatuate fans and inspire artists today. Green Coca-Cola bottles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.art-critique.com\/en\/2019\/12\/artwork-eaten-at-art-basel-miami-beach\/\" target=\"_blank\">bananas<\/a>, and Life Savers were among other foods that inspired Warhol and in 1982, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.art-critique.com\/en\/2019\/02\/bold-burger-king-super-bowl-ad-features-andy-warhol\/\" target=\"_blank\">Warhol was filmed eating a Burger King burger<\/a> as part of a work called \u201c66 Scenes from America\u201d by Danish filmmaker\u00a0J\u00f8rgen Leth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flipping through the pages of an old cookbook is often an amusing experience.
